Germanium windows are optical windows that are opaque to UV and visible light but offer broad transmission in the infrared (IR) spectrum. With minimal chromatic aberration due to low dispersion, these germanium optical windows are highly effective in IR applications, especially when paired with an anti-reflection coating to counter their high refractive index (4.0 from 2 – 14μm). Germanium (Ge) is a heavy and hard material, boasting a Knoop Hardness of 780, nearly twice that of magnesium fluoride (MgF), and a density of 5.33 g/cm³, making it ideal for robust optical applications. However, its transmission properties decrease sharply with rising temperatures—a phenomenon known as thermal runaway—limiting its use in environments where temperatures exceed 100°C. Despite this, germanium windows are well-suited for IR laser applications and can function as long pass filters, transmitting wavelengths greater than 2 µm. Additionally, germanium is nonreactive to air, water, alkalis, and many acids, and is highly scratch-resistant, further enhancing its suitability for rugged and demanding environments. Germanium glass windows, germanium IR windows, and germanium window transmission properties make these components indispensable in various high-performance optical systems.
